White christmas for Haydock youngsters

Snow machines were at the ready to give youngsters from the Haydock area an early white Christmas - but an early christmas present came in the form of a smattering of real frostiness.

Children and families went along to the CETRA (Church Estate Tenants and Residents Association) base on Pimblett Road for a fun filled Christmas event, organised by CETRA, Helena Homes and the local Police community support officers.

They had the chance to meet Father Christmas in his grotto, which was decked out with an authentic fireplace, to tell him and his helpers, Mother Christmas and the Christmas Elf, what they want for Christmas and have their photograph taken.

There were various Christmas stalls to keep both the children and adults entertained from tombolas to 'name the doll.' Mayor of St Helens, Cllr Terry Shields came to open the grotto and queued up with the youngsters to sample all the stalls.

There was also a raffle on the day with some great prizes up for grabs including a Nintendo Wii, signed Saints shirt and Everton FC stadium tour.

More than 60 youngsters went along to the first evening of the two day event with money raised over the two days helping to fund future activities for people living in the surrounding area.

Helena's Community Engagement Officer, Joanne Dawson said: "The Tenants and Residents Association and the local police community support officers did a fantastic job of organising the event, it has been a huge success and great to see families coming along to enjoy themselves and get into the festive spirit."
